Looking After Your Hands
Sistas, we seem to be very good at looking after the skin on our face and even pampering our feet, but we often neglect to look after the skin on the hardest working part of our body – our hands.
Our hands are where we tend to show the first signs of aging. They can easily give the game away if they are neglected.
Our hands also play a very significant role in our day-to-day lives. From cooking and feeding ourselves, to holding our child’s hand when crossing the road, to digging in the garden, or even holding that umbrella when it rains. It’s only right that we give our hands a little care and attention as a reward for all that work that they do, especially in winter when the weather can dry them out even more than usual.
That’s where a good hand cream comes in. Hand creams are a product that are very much underestimated. Even if you do not have rough or dry skin, they still make a difference to your hard working hands. Using a hand cream is the best way to repair and restore damaged hands, ensuring not only to look younger and more beautiful, but feel softer and smoother too.
Hand creams also make a huge difference when you are undergoing treatments like chemotherapy (in fact, any type of body product does) as these treatments tend to dry out your skin more than usual and can create itchiness, excessive dryness, flaking or tightness. Keeping up with some moisturising creams for your hands (and body) is a great way to combat this.
However, and creams are different to other moisturisers used on other parts of the body. This is because the hands require different care to the rest of the body. They are often exposed to the elements and chemicals, therefore need more specific ingredients, like an SPF, to combat these conditions. They need to look and feel good as well as stay protected.
So what does this sista use on her hands?
Currently, I am using two hand creams from the same company, Weleda. These products are their Pomegranate Regenerating Hand Cream * and their signature product Skin Food*. They contain all the right ingredients required to counteract all of these issues our hands suffer. I have been very impressed by their products that I even had my mum and my sister road test them while I was visiting them recently. They loved them too!
Weleda is a company that strives to source only the finest ingredients from ethically sourced, natural, organic and sustainable suppliers. Their extensive range of natural and organic products include face, body, oral, deodorants, toothpastes, bath & shower, mother and baby care, and natural medicines and are entirely free from synthetic ingredients.
The Pomegranate Regenerating Hand Cream* (AUD$18 for 50mL) is just heavenly! The pomegranates are not only delightful in fragrance, but also offer strong anti-oxidants properties and promote cell renewal – perfect for restoring that youthful beauty to your hands. Out of the two products, this one wins out for me in regards to my hands as it soaks in just beautifully and leaves my hands feeling hydrated, super soft and smooth. It doesn’t leave my hands feeling greasy, nor does it feel like it’s been washed off the instant you run water over your hands. A little product goes a long way too, so a tube is going to last you a very long time.
Skin Food* (AUD$15 for 30mL) is a bit of a multi-tasking cream. Whilst this product can be applied to any part of the body (it’s in that category of Bio Oil or Nutrimetics Nutri-Rich Oil), it is particularly good on the hands. It hydrates dry skin, has calming properties that sooth and protect the hands from the elements, smooths rough skin and improves dull complexions. I found this product has a thick, honey-like consistency when you first apply it (which is the reason the pomegranate one wins out for me), but your skin soon drinks it up and enjoys every last little bit of it. The small tube fits in travel cosmetics case or hand bag so it’s very convenient to take it anywhere.
